A recent upgrade - an awesome GTX 580 - has left me with two GTX 260 video cards sitting idle. Since up until Thursday each was pumping out 100,000 boinc credits daily on Primegrid (they'll also run GPUGrid or the GPU version of SETI) this is a terrible waste.

If any TSBT member is interested, and obviously I'd prefer to keep this capability within the team, then you can have each one for £40 including P&P or £35 if you collect or it is convenient for me to drop it off at your place.

Each is totally reliable and is offered with a 6 month guarantee.

Either post here or send me a PM if you are interested.
[Edit I said they were GTX 240s which (a) don't exist & (b) if they did would be relatively feeble beasts Embarassed ]

C'mon.

Somebody must have a use for these. Even if your own status is unimportant to you or if, heaven forfend, the fortunes of TSBT matter not a jot to you, consider the science. Mankind needs those giant prime numbers more than ever! Wink

Tell you what, I'll shave a £iver off the price of each. If they aren't grabbed in the next 48hrs they go on ebay and might be snapped up by a member of a rival team. Shocked Shocked On your conscience be it.

Hi Willie, that sounds like an absolute bargain to me. Unfortunately I've no need to upgrade at the moment (my two GTX470 soc's are running well). Would be a great (cheap) starting point though for someone looking to get into GPU crunching for the first time.

That's precisely what I thought. Strange there are no takers. Sad

There's currently a low volume of traffic on the site so I might just leave off a week before ebaying them. I'll give them a twit/tweet/twat/whatever and see see if anyone on Twitter wants them.

Looking at the average stats most members don't seem to bother much with GPU crunching Sad

I will rephrase that, most members don’t seem to bother at all. bandhead

According to BOINCStats only 204 of 757 TSBT members have been active in the last month. This is a sorry 27% which seems to reflect badly on the tenacity of TSBT members until you consider that of a total of 2,194,602 million Boincers a mere 306,690 are active. That's a truly pants 14%.

So, in context, we are twice as tenacious as the Boinc herd which is some sort of comfort. Possibly? Confused

Assuming that headering the nearest wall might not do the job, does anyone have any suggestion as to how we can nudge these percentages in the direction of respectability?

14%!... Sounds like they ditched their for junk heaps for iPads and are now busy addling their brains on Angry Birds...

I'd have taken you up on the GTX470s if I could only work out which slot on the toaster they go in! Aardvark's not divvying up his secrets for love, money or piracy on the high seas... B***it, millennium hand and shrimp!... Anyway, I retweeted your offer in case anyone might be interested. Very Happy

P.S. The nice thing about headering the nearest brick wall is that it feels great when you stop... drunken .... This appears to be one of the reasons I seem to do it quite often.

I think the Penguins right people are ditching desktops for ipads or at least laptops, a trend that I am sure will continue.

The largest group of people to invest in seriously in computers with quick graphics cards are gamers. People just don’t buy desktop computers with graphics card in large numbers these days. Take a look inside your local PC-World, rows of laptops whose crunching performance is usually very limited, even compared to a basic desktop computers graphics card.

If we want to get the stats up we need to recruit from PC gaming circles. People who already have the hardware and don’t mind paying for the electric.

Also nothing wrong with a bit of head banging, it’s what got me into this.

Some points:
1. What's wrong with angry birds? Got me thru many a tedious meeting (you need to keep the sound low).
2. Low power computing makes sense & what I use for 70% of my computing is a wee Dell Netbook which on good day can crunch 100 or so credits for SETI or SIMAP.
3. BOINC is supposed to be about ordinary computer users donating their spare cycles to science rather than driven obsessive types setting up dedicated crunching farms (yes, yes, I know, it's like being lectured by Ryan Giggs about family values Rolling Eyes Laughing ).
4. If the 2 million or so computers in Scotland capable of 100 credits per day produced them for Boinc & TSBT then the extra 200 million per day would totally eclipse our current output 40 fold and would boost total worldwide BOINC output by over a third.
5. So both ethics and self-interest suggest that getting the masses Boincing is a better way forward than adding more elite GPU crunchers to the ranks.
6. Both approches together would work even better! Cool

We seem to have drifted off topic.

Perhaps we should start a new threat on the teams future and recruitment/ active member retention issues.

....Nothing at all! In fact I have just downloaded it to my boss's Android Phone and packed her off to a boring meeting in Brescia happily slinging the little birdies at brick walls.... at least she won't be nailing my hide to her office door this weekend... which, I dare say, is something of a relief, at least, from my point of view! Very Happy

You're right Gary, I think we have wandered off-topic. If I remember rightly we were trying to find a home for a pair of GTX's so a separate thread on membership issues would be good idea (though I admit I am low on these lately). Cool

Thanks Gary. Right, back on topic: My buckshee cards.

For those who haven't read my correction above.

These are NVIDIA GTX 260 cards.

By the time I'm done upgrading/rationalising I'll have 5 of the little devils to give away (2 available just now).

Reduced price, TSBT members, is £25 each plus £5 p&p. Delivery or collection welcomed.

Ok, I make no claims to know anything about graphics cards, but Im assuming that they will blow my NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT (511MB) out the water?

If so, I'm interested Smile
